Message from the Chief of Police

Many of our residents are likely aware of the significant amount of police activity that occurred in our village last evening, involving both our department and our partners at the Nassau County Police Department, including a helicopter and canine units.

Last evening a resident, who was away from his residence, noted activity on his property due to a camera notification.  Our department was notified and responded immediately.  After a foot pursuit one suspect was apprehended, however even after a very extensive search, utilizing canines and a helicopter, the second suspect eluded capture, for now.  The individuals involved are part of the South American burglary groups that have been targeting the north-shore areas of Nassau County.

Without any doubt our resident’s diligence in remotely monitoring his home and promptly notifying our department, combined with our officer’s actions, prevented a residential burglary from occurring last evening.  Due to an ongoing investigation many specific details will need to be kept confidential.  It would be counter-productive to release too much information at this juncture.

If you attended one of the recent community meetings you heard these tips first-hand; making your home appear occupied by leaving lights on throughout the home and calling our department immediately if you note ANY suspicious activity are very important considerations to reduce the risk of residential burglaries in our village.   Although burglary activity continues to be a concern for north-shore communities, there are no additional safety concerns as a result of this incident for village residents.  If anyone noticed  suspicious activity or captured any video footage from last night between 645pm and 800pm,  please contact the Old Westbury Police 516-626-0200 or email any video footage directly to mbrown@oldwestburypd.org.
